Managing EC in a sandy soil

This is a soil from a soil pit at Paruna in the South Australian Mallee reviewed in the last few days. As the sandy soil has dried down the salts accumulated above the thin band of elluviated clay are clearly evident. The EC changes rapidly in this sand as the sand particles dry down in comparison to a clay. Accumulated and mobile salts can be an issue in these soils. It is very important to understand how the conductivity is formed in order to manage crops grown in them. Critical for matching moisture to management.
